Helloooo Sternal Journalists,
And happy Succession finale to those who celebrate. If you do like Succession, this will not have any spoilers. If you don’t, this might not be that fun but it could be.
At some point in the third season1 of the HBO-slash-Max show about a Murdoch-esque family jockeying for control of their Fox-esque media empire, I noticed how often the characters utilized the word “uh-huh.”
It is a Logan classic that he deploys when he needs to think or just plain doesn’t want to answer a question. And the Siblings, as well as almost everyone in Logan’s orbit, appear to have picked it up either as intentional imitation or unintentional absorption.
This is part of the “fun” of the show: constantly wondering if all of these people are shitty as a result of being together or together as a result of being shitty. It helps us, I think, try to process whether our own shortcomings (moral or otherwise) are a result of our circumstances or choices we’ve made.
And it’s prit-tee cool to see all that wrapped up in “uh-huh.” For the record, by my count, there were 10 “uh-huhs” in the finale. I could be off by one or two, but it was close. I think they’re all pretty fun ones to watch out for too, if you haven’t watched.
For a more in-depth take on the Succession “uh-huh,” you can check out this piece from I-D. But for the thing I hope you’ve been jonesing for since you started reading this, yes, somebody did a supercut of all of the “uh-huhs” in seasons 1-3. It is hilarious and also kinda cool because you can sort of track the plot pretty well. I hope the release it for season 4 soon. Anyway, behold:
And onto a few other…

Inside Rupert Murdoch’s Succession Drama. Article. This Vanity Fair long read is perfect if you are like me and wanted a lil more Succession in your life and also to get a better understanding of the real world shenanigans it’s based on.
“Bill Hader Returns.” Podcast episode. This episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend made me laugh out loud a lot.
I’m An Entertainer. Netflix Special. This Wanda Sykes stand-up special also made me laugh a lot. Highly recommend at least watching through the “mosquito man” story. Definitely gonna be one of my favorite specials of the year.
The Lost Hanz and Franz Movie. Podcast. This is also in the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend feed, but it’s a separate and amazing project where Conan, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, and Robert Smigel read through the feature length version of the beloved sketch “Hanz and Franz,” of which I own a t-shirt-turned-tank-top that I bought at the 30 Rockefeller Center got shop while on a band trip to NYC in 8th grade (shout out NBMS!). There is so much joy and fun and silliness in this and it’s my new favorite thing.
dui. Song. This is a very funny and edgy hyper pop song I found on TikTok. I have it stuck in my head. You should not EVER do what they say in the song, but it’s catchy as hell.
That’s all for this week!
Much love,
Julian
P.S. I spend anywhere between two and twelve hours a week on the Sternal Journal. If you enjoy receiving it (and are RICH) consider becoming a paying subscriber. For just a few bucks a month, you can provide me with a bit more time to come up with fun topics, poems, and interviews; and you with probably fewer typos.
I know this was the fourth season; I’m just saying I noticed the thing I’m about to bring up in the third season.
