Hi Sternal Journalists,
I have 1-2 essays planned coming up very soon:
A CompLit analysis of Carrie Coon’s monologue in the White Lotus finale with the Nathan Lane’s monologue in the Mid Century Modern premiere.
A man I talked to in line at Whole Foods while he ate an entire slice of pizza and restored my faith in the world.
They both have to do with community and adult friendship, and will take an optimistic read on indicators I’m seeing that everybody in media and irl is kind of sick of being siloed off from each other and ready to be in company with each other, even if its annoying some of the time.
But right now my back hurts and I’m been honestly keeping a stellar sleeping schedule, so I don’t want to kill myself staying up for two hours writing one of them and instead am going to share something way better:
NSYNC CANCUN MTV SPRING BREAK 1999
I have only been to one MTV Spring Break event, and it was seeing Asher Roth perform “I Love College” during the song’s radio heyday, and my Junior year of college. That was awesome, but I’m sure nothing compares to the cultural moment portrayed in this video.
I have no idea why it popped up in my YouTube algorithm, but I watched it with Friend of The Journalists Chris M. last night at 2am after a gathering with some friends and it is an absolute banger. Actually, I’m not sure if Chris liked it, but he at least sat politely while I kept saying “Damn!” and “Wow, I can’t believe we have access to this. This is awesome.”
Stream and blast it in its entirety on the largest screen you have access to, and I promise you will have a great day. Send your thoughts.
Alrighty, time for a few other…
Recommendations!
Warfare. Film. Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, 28 Days Later) teamed up with his military consultant from Civil War, Ray Mendoza, to write and direct a film that portrays a battle Mendoza was involved in, to the best of he and his fellow soldiers’ memories. What ensues is heart-thumping, terrifying, and fucked up in a variety of ways. Very good movie.
Contratto Bitter. Liqueur. I don’t really know anything about liqueurs, but this reminded me of Italy and tasted good. Campari-esque.
Mid Century Modern. Television Show. Alluded to earlier, but I watched the pilot of this multi-cam sitcom from the creators of Will & Grace, and it’s some fun sitcom farce.
“What are Teenagers Actually Seeing on Their Phones?” Podcast Episode. This feels like cheating because its a podcast episode about a TV show I wanna watch, but Search Engine’s PJ Vogt interviews the director of a tv docu-series, Social Studies, which follows teens while also screen recording their phones so you can see their lives in parallel with their phone lives. Sounds spooky and important!
Alrighty, that’s all! Love to all!
Julian!
Normally, I use this area to say that you can upgrade to paid if you’re rich. I hugely appreciate those of you who have, but nobody should ever feel pressured to! AAAAALSO though, if you’re the type to hit a like or leave a comment and you just haven’t thought of doing it on the SternJourn yet, come on in! Lemme know if you love or hate the recs! All engagement unfortunately is good engagement. But if you do not have time, get outta here and don’t worry about it! I’ll see ya next week!
Also also, if you would come to a show if I was in your city, fill out this form (same form as before, so no need to refill if you already have!) It helps me plan and also prove to bookers that I have some sway in your place!
