Hellooo Sternal Journalists,
I am writing this from my phone on a plane en route back to LA from Louisville, KY where some dear friends got married. I of course took the opportunity to get some Jack Harlow nerd-ery in by stopping at Carmichael’s, an independent bookstore he shouts out in They Don’t Love It:
He
He doesn’t make a huge deal about it, but the man is a massive advocate for reading. In his British GQ Man of the Year acceptance speech, he even shouts out the Accelerated Reader program for contributing to his lyrical prowess.
Kristen and I spent at least an hour in Carmichael’s and I wound up picking up a copy of Hunter S. Thompson’s book on the Hell’s Angels, which I’m already starting to devour. I highly recommend letting your favorite artist’s song lyrics act as a sort of scavenger hunt to find new favorite artists.
Anyway, what with traveling a bunch, I didn’t do an inordinate amount of writing or hot-taking but I did write exactly one first draft of an emo poem, so welcome back to The Sternal Journal Emo Notes App Poetry Corner.
This Poetry Corner’s offering is called WELDING and I think it was inspired by the eclipse from earlier in the week, but they both share the whole thing about how you’re not supposed to look at them and I frankly thing welding is more beautiful than an eclipse. So here it is:
So emo and slapdash, but sometimes you gotta let yourself be earnest and blurty!
Anyway, here are the…
Recommendations!
The Dark and Spicy Bloody Mary at Biscuit Belly in Louisville, KY. Beverage. This is the best Bloody Mary I’ve had in my entire life. The garnish was a mini biscuit sandwich. If you’re in Louisville and drink Bloody Mary’s, you must try it.
A Few Good Men. Movie. Yeah, yeah. I know. It’s a classic that I’d never seen. Loved it, but what a nerd Aaron Sorkin must have been to write that stuff in college.
The Dinner Party (Frasier). Television Episode. I wanted to watch some Frasier for a project I’m working on and looked up some “best of” lists to see where to start. And I forgot how much I fucking love this show. If you’ve ever thought about diving back into the Crane-iverse, this borderline slapstick farce is a great place to start. I forgot how joyfully silly this show was and kinda think nothing like it exists today.
Is There A Sane Way To Use The Internet? Podcast Episode. Ezra Klein guesting on PJ Vogt’s podcast to talk about social media diets??? Two of my favorite internet journalists talking about how reporting on the internet has ruined their mental health and wondering if anything can be done while also getting deep into media theory?? Who’s the nerd now, Sorkin?
Alrighty, that’s all for this week! Be blurty, be emo, send me what you’re dressing as for Halloween.
Much love!
Julian
PS here is me with my brand new Jack Harlow xmas ornament. Sorry, family!
" I highly recommend letting your favorite artist’s song lyrics act as a sort of scavenger hunt to find new favorite artists." Brilliant!
"Welding": Love it!
And oh man, we have to talk about "A Few Good Men." The recent (live) Rewatchables on it is an all-timer.
