Hello Sternal Journalists!
My week has been very scattered, but the one thing I’ve been consistent on is fighting restlessness by writing very low-stakes, high-energy raps. Perhaps you saw a sample of this on social media a couple weeks ago.
Working that verse into a collab with the great Joe Cabello currently, but I’ve been jotting things down and listening to a lot of type-beats while driving, so it just so happens that the only creative work I have that is worth a lick of showing to you is one of those lyrics and it is the following:
I’m Asterix to her Obelix;
She’s fillin’ dem pants out.
Build a factory in her ovaries;
Makin’ her mans pout.
This is a very silly line that I tried to make sex positive without being derogatory, and I take extra cover from the fact that it’s definitely folklore in the Swift-ian sense. (I think I’ve now alienated all four quadrants).
But really, I was listening to a lot of Central Cee and wanted to write a UK drill song and this is what came out. I did say out loud though, “I just feel like someone must have rhymed ‘Asterix and Obelix’ with ‘factory in her ovaries,’” and was assured by the loved one I said this to that the rhyme was neither inevitable nor necessary as I seem to think it is.
Anyway! Sometimes, you just play in the sandbox and all you have to show for it is a pile of bullshit.

The Quest to Find a Rectangle in a Square. Article. I have a few mathematician friends and it’s always fascinating hearing them talk about the creativity in what I perceive to be such a straightforward field. This pretty quick, light read illustrated that creativity in a way I’ve never really understood before. Also, they refer to a “lovely problem” which is on its face simple but actually very complex. I feel like problems like that in life are not lovely at all, so it’s fun that that can be a cool thing in math.
The Tao of Rick Rubin. Podcast Episode. This Ezra Klein interview with Rick Rubin starts with both of them taking five deep breaths in real time and then just keeps being zen as fuck. Highly recommend. Gonna buy Rubin’s book.
Prep-Pilled with Articles of Interest’s Avery Trufelman. Podcast Episode. I’ve heard about this podcast, Throwing Fits, as some sort of embodiment of the Guys-Who-Are-Into-Jonah-Hill-As-A-Fashion-Icon movement, and that’s sort of what it is. It describes itself as “Two grown dirtbags just tryna navigate the male zeitgeist.” They are EXCELLENT foils to the creme de la creme of podcasting Avery Trufelman and she’s there to play ball. If you like podcasts or fashion or Japan or millennial irony, this is for you.
Me & You. Song. This Central See song is way too good to have inspired by Asterix & Obelix line, but I don’t make the rules!
P.S. I spend anywhere between two and twelve hours a week on the Sternal Journal. If you enjoy receiving it (and are RICH) consider becoming a paying subscriber. For just a few bucks a month, you can provide me with a bit more time to come up with fun topics, poems, and interviews; and you with probably fewer typos.
