Hello Sternal Journalists,
On Friday of last week, I saw some meme about the “hawk tuah girl,” a woman who went viral for a brief clip of a man-on-the-street interview she did in Nashville. If you’ve never heard of it, (a) congratulations for not being the slightest bit online, and (b) you can google it if you want. I will warn that it’s a little risqué, but she appears to be having a good time with her moment, having appeared onstage to say hew now catchphrase with Zach Bryan this past weekend!
Anyway, when I saw the meme, for whatever reason, I thought “this feels like something out of a bizarro Seinfeld episode” and I jotted down a little parody scene which I promptly posted on Instagram. It got some love there, so I thought I should probably find a way to pop it onto the platform with significantly more potential for virality, Tiktok.
I threw the lines on to some pictures of Jerry and George, and tossed it onto the ‘Tok. And for the first time in a year or so, I went VIRAL BABY.
Four things about this (for me) viral moment:
I have not gotten any better with the ramped up phone addiction when I have likes pouring in. It basically ruined my Saturday refreshing to see new likes and comments.
It doesn’t hurt my feelings when I get mean comments. I actually like them.
It does hurt my feelings a little bit when I get nice comments because, to me, this is fairly unoriginal compared to the stuff I’m more proud of and I spent all of fifteen minutes putting it together.
It’s weird that we put so much emphasis on views. As of last checking (which was seconds ago due to my addiction), I had like 9,000 likes and 95,000 views. By Tiktok mentality, I’m supposed to boast about the views! But really, that means there were 9,000 who liked it and 86,000 people who saw it, but didn’t. Why do we brag about them? I don’t know.
All that being said, people liked it so I’m sharing it here. Apologies that the number of images makes it so you’ll have to click on a link and not read it directly in your email. Without further ado… Seinfeld Hawk Tuah!
That’s it! At first, I felt a little bad that I hadn’t included anything with Kramer, but people on Tiktok actually had a ball pitching Kramer’s storyline in the comments so it all worked out!
Anyway!
Recommendations!
The Bear. Television Show. Season 3 has arrived and the first episode is one of the most grounded and trippy episodes of television I’ve ever seen. Full on one-to-one artistic depiction of a stress spiral. But I’m very into it.
Denver Basic Income Project. Report. It wouldn’t be the Sternal Journal if I didn’t engage in both sophomoric humor and academic homelessness literature. I learned about this project, which provides unconditional cash transfers to unhoused people living in Denver, from a curmudgeonly but well-meaning friend. You can read qualitative and quantitative one-sheets (all pretty accessible!) which show that the cash transfers all resulted in a marked increase in participants being housed within the ten months of the program. Cool!
French Kiwi Juice. Album. Someone at work recommended this jazzy funky upbeat album. It is jazzy and funky and upbeat and there are worse albums to start your week to.
Inside Out 2. Film. I saw this last week and, while I spent a decent amount of it trying to remember who the bad guy was from Inside Out 1 and wondering why there was no Pixar short at the beginning, I enjoyed it and laughed a fair amount.
Okay, that’s all! Much love!
Julian!
Normally, I use this area to say that you can upgrade to paid if you’re rich. I hugely appreciate those of you who have, but nobody should ever feel pressured to! (Although huge thanks to my recent new paid subscribers! You have made it slightly easier to do this!) AAAAALSO though, if you’re the type to hit a like or leave a comment and you just haven’t thought of doing it on the SternJourn yet, come on in! Lemme know if you love or hate the recs! All engagement unfortunately is good engagement. But if you do not have time, get outta here and don’t worry about it! I’ll see ya next week!
