Hello Sternal Journalists,
SCHEDULING NOTE: This is a real late one. I gave myself the grace to do the SternJourn a day late because of the 3 day weekend and having a big hometown show Sunday night, and here I’ve let it go a full SIX days late. Which means, yes, that you are receiving a Saturday evening SternJourn. I will probably push it by a day or two next week so you’ll receive what should have been tomorrow’s SternJourn on Tuesday or Wednesday, and then back to the regular schedule (streak unbroken!) next Sunday. If you were counting on getting a Sternal Journal tomorrow for any reason, respond to this email and I will provide you a bespoke one. I am serious about this.
Anyway! Had a blast last week featuring for my friend Sam Salem at DC’s Comedy Loft. Sam was very stressed about ticket sales, but the place was packed out so he had nothing to be worried about because he is a famous TikToker and separately a funny stage comedian.
Because the place was so packed out and it was such a fun show, I’m sharing with YOU Sternal Journalists an EXCLUSIVE new 3 minute YouTube stand up clip of some of my favorite new material. ENJOY
And now???
Recommendations!
Following. Film. I watched this first movie of Christopher Nolan on a plane and it was very good. 70 minutes, snappy, intriguing, and a very tightly plotted twisty-turny story. But then again, I liked Tenet and I haven’t seen Memento, so take my Nolan opinions with a grain of salt.
Couples Therapy. Show. I also watched this Maura Tierney-led scripted Showtime show on a plane. I thought the acting was very naturalistic and the style of story-telling refreshingly organic for a scripted show. So I had a lot of mixed feelings when I got to the end of the pilot and realized, based on the credits, that this was not a scripted show at all and that was not Maura Tierney. It is apparently a documentary starring a real couples therapist and her real couple clients. Ethically questionable, but very riveting.
There Will Be Blood. Film. Also watched this on a plane (I spent 11 hours on planes since the last SternJourn), which is exactly how Paul Thomas Anderson would have wanted me to see it. I liked it, but thought the inclusion of milkshakes in this very period movie would make a lot more sense after having seen it, and it does not. Were milkshakes new in the 1920s? Are they way older than I thought? Why is that what comes to mind for his metaphor?
Juevos Rancheros and an Espresso at Java Nation in Kensington, MD. Meal. Great coffee shop in my hometown. I had this meal two days in a row. Highly recommend.
Welcome to Wrexham Season 2. Television Show. Catching up on this as Season 3 is currently airing, but truly loving it. I wanna go to Wrexham.
Okay, that’s all! Hope my erratic scheduling makes this a nice surprise and not a mid-weekend annoyance! Much love!
Julian!
Normally, I use this area to say that you can upgrade to paid if you’re rich. I hugely appreciate those of you who have, but nobody should ever feel pressured to! (Although huge thanks to my recent new paid subscribers! You have made it slightly easier to do this!) AAAAALSO though, if you’re the type to hit a like or leave a comment and you just haven’t thought of doing it on the SternJourn yet, come on in! Lemme know if you love or hate the recs! All engagement unfortunately is good engagement. But if you do not have time, get outta here and don’t worry about it! I’ll see ya next week!
