If you’re in New Orleans, some exciting news coming soon!
Hello Sternal Journalists,
Huzzah! The Sternal Journal was returned to its normally scheduled Sunday time. There is likely one more bonus issue around the corner because I’m still a week behind, so! This week!
I’m just crankin’ and stankin’ some recommendations because I’ve had a chill week of re-acclimating, cleaning, unpacking, and getting back to non-Scotland life.
So no big blathering essay this week, but I actually am excited about all my recs this week. Before I get to them, though, I did a very fun show on Friday night called Well-Dressed at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
It’s in a fancy theater that also feels like it’s on a cruise. It is technically a bad room for comedy because everyone is sitting in a VIP booth-type seating situation, but it also feels like the types of places the Rat Pack would perform comedy in Vegas so one rises to the occasion. It wound up being a lot of fun and we all had some good laughs, but mostly, the pictures are siiiiick:
Aaaanyway, that’s enough self-indulgence even for a weekly newsletter nobody asked for. Onto the news you can use!
Recommendations!
Trap. Film. I just got back from seeing the new M. Night Shyamalan movie starring Josh Hartnett. I am absolutely here for the Hartnaissance, and this movie is no exception. If you’ve seen a trailer, you know what the movie is about. If you haven’t, Josh Hartnett plays a doting father taking his daughter to see her favorite pop star at their stadium tour. But it just so happens that, on the day they’re going to the show, the authorities have laid a trap to catch notorious serial killer The Butcher, who they have good reason to believe will be at the concert. But. It. Just. So. Happens. That. Josh Hartnett is also the serial killer.
Torn between his duties as a doting father (which he takes very seriously and seems to find joy in) and his self-preservation instincts, he attempts to thread the needle to varying degrees of success. It’s by no means a perfect movie and my friends and I each had multiple “butwhatabouts” upon leaving the theater, but we also had a very good time and, in my opinion, the movie nails everything important. For people concerned, it is not scary and it is funny at times. See it in a theater or on a plane. Nowhere else.
Andre Leon Talley Oxford Union Address. YouTube Video. I was watching a YouTube interview of Tyler the Creator as I do probably every other month and towards the end, he mentioned Talley. I knew vaguely of him as a person who was big at Vogue, but figured if he was good enough for Tyler, he was good enough for me. I don’t know much about fashion and am not a fashion guy, but he is such an engaging and surprising chatter that I guarantee almost anyone would find something interesting in listening to at least a few minutes.
Coreys. Short Film. This YouTube short film from Conner O’Malley cannot be described more accurately than by the words of commenter Skippy4500, so I will just share those: “Conner is the only true artist working in the post internet era. He's like if David Lynch grew up playing Halo 2 and watching videos on ebaumsworld.”
Better Me Than You. Album. Big Sean is a very, very good rapper and musician and I don’t think we talk about it enough. If you must only listen to one song to see if you’re into it, I think try “Precision” or “Apologize.”
Alrighty, those were bloated but I stand by all of them and think you could spend your free time in a lot worse ways than cranking through all of them this week!
Much love!
Julian!
Normally, I use this area to say that you can upgrade to paid if you’re rich. I hugely appreciate those of you who have, but nobody should ever feel pressured to! (Although huge thanks to my recent new paid subscribers! You have made it slightly easier to do this!) AAAAALSO though, if you’re the type to hit a like or leave a comment and you just haven’t thought of doing it on the SternJourn yet, come on in! Lemme know if you love or hate the recs! All engagement unfortunately is good engagement. But if you do not have time, get outta here and don’t worry about it! I’ll see ya next week!
Those piiiics!
