Hello Sternal Journalists!
I’ve spent all of my writing time this week tinkering with Chat-GPT, specifically the new GPT builder tool. This lets you prime a bespoke “GPT,” tailored to your specific purpose.
I thought it could be cool to make one that would use works from the public domain to help the user find inspiration for a creative project, or just create a fun thought experiment. So I created DOMAIN SCOUT.
Theoretically, this could be fun/useful for the professional creative looking for a little non-copyrighted mental nudge AND for the casual internet user just looking for some algorithm to tell them what it might be like if Captain Ahab and Steamboat Willie got in a fistfight at a tavern for sailors.
I’m still priming it, but if you have a Chat-GPT Plus account, you can mess around with it as it currently stands and it’ll update as I try to improve it. If you do happen to take it for a spin, please let me know thoughts! If you’re annoyed that you need a GPT Plus account to access it, I am too but you can complain to me about that as well.
In the meantime, here is an AI digital art depiction of the story from a couple weeks ago where I absolutely shat the bed while trying to play my Anne Hathaway song after too many martinis.
Next week, I promise there will be less AI talk and much more “Best SternJourns of 2023” talk. Get your nominations in now! And then…
Recommendations
Blue Eye Samurai. Television. I mentioned last week, but I binged this while I had the flu and absolutely loved it. Kill Bill meets Mulan with a dash of Mamma Mia. It is my obsession. Please tell me if you watch it.
The Brothers Sun. Television. This new Netflix show is like a really good CW show about a son of a Taiwanese Triad boss who has to lay low in L.A. while he figures out who attempted to assassinate his dad, and tries to connect with his little brother who is obsessed with improv comedy. It’s got heart, it’s got laughs, it’s got good fights.
Dilla Time. Book. I had three hours to kill in the Detroit airport on Friday, and they have a really good airport bookstore with a solid section of just Detroit books. I had heard about this part-biography-part-musicology book about the late, great J Dilla, but I am 40 pages in and its blowing me away. Highly recommend.
The Equalizer 3. Film. I watched this with my dad the last couple days I wan in Maryland and it is a great dad movie. It’s also just a nice story about how Denzel Washington’s character really wants to retire in this quaint Italian seaside town, but darnit if the mafia won’t let him be. I think Denzel and Antoine Fuqua just wanted to spend a summer in Italy, but the fights are good and the whodunit is fun.
Alrighty, that’s all for this week! Much love!
Julian
P.S. I spend anywhere between two and twelve hours a week on the Sternal Journal. If you enjoy receiving it (and are RICH) consider becoming a paying subscriber. For just a few bucks a month, you can provide me with a bit more time to come up with fun topics, poems, and interviews; and you with probably fewer typos.
