Hello Sternal Journalists!
I am putting five minutes on the clock and eschewing the typical format because I’ve had a dooze of a week and am allowing myself to phone this one in because also the main feature of this SternJourn will be promotion of a podcast I guested on this week, and as the episode of this pod is one hour and forty nine minutes long, you’ve got more than enough to entertain yourself with, I promise.
So housekeeping! If you are new and want to see what the SternJourn is about, check out our best of lists here: 2022, 2021, or 2020.
If you want to come to a show, I have them in LA November 10th and 26th (ticket deets to come but message me if you’d like a reminder) and in Denver on December 14th and 16th! I’m working on some dates hopefully in NY, DC, and Philly soon as well!
Onto the main event:
That is a picture of me last night enjoying a delivery margarita from Gardens of Taxco (highly recommend) while watching my recent appearance on Kinda Big, a podcast hosted by comedians Michael Powers and Sam Landers.
Listen, this is one of those “two comedy guys have their comedy friends on a podcast to talk for one to two hours and make jokes and tell stories in an aimless way.” I understand that that genre has a stigma. But I genuinely think this was a fun and engaging conversation, and if you like conversational podcasts and/or hearing me tell stories, it’s worth a try. Here, a conversation with a friend whose name is removed to protect their privacy, is more proof:
I will also say that we do still make it a very “dudes doing a podcast” conversation after a little while, so if you want to avoid hearing me talk about potentially very “private” things (in I think a tasteful way though!) feel free to skip.
Content-wise, I talk about the GateKeeper Management gambit; bike lane advocacy on the neighborhood council, my upcoming appearance on FuseTV’s Sex Sells (this is where the uh vulnerable sharing occurs), Edinburgh, and the show Naked Attraction (which I am regrettably not on).
Anyway, if you want to give it a listen, check it out here (or wherever podcasts or given away):
And if you want to watch it, you can do it here!
And if you don’t want to watch it, heeeere are a couple other things you might want to check out:
Recommendations!
Why’d I Take Speed for Twenty Years? Podcast Episode. I’m recommending Search Engine almost every week, but this one was wild to me. I’ve never been prescribed adderall, but many people I know and love have. This was a balanced and wild deep dive into the history of it’s birth and how we came to societally depend on it.
ONE MORE TIME… Album. This new Blink-182 album starts off rockin’ and I haven’t even finished it yet, but booooyyyyy is it fun. Highly recommend for anyone trying to bring the some aughtsy angst into their lives.
Why Do Fan-Made Trailers Rule the Internet? Article. This is one of those feels-silly-but-I-think-is-actually-important cultural shifts and it’s worth learning the history of and people behind it. It includes the first ever known example of a fan edit from 1975, done on a projector lol.
Nate Bargatze Monologue. Stand-Up. My favorite SNL monologue in many years from one of my favorite comedians. A very fun ten minute watch!
Okay, that took longer than five minutes but sending love to all byeeee!
Love,
Julian
