UPCOMING SHOWS:
JULY 26 MAMA SHELTER SHOW CANCELED. For me. I’m going to be out of town. Still a very fun show and great line-up and you should go if you wanna do something!
Instead, there is very maybe tentatively something in New York the same night (Tues. July 26). Reply if you want to be kept abreast of such a thing. It’s like a 20% chance of working, but gonna try.
AUGUST 4-28 (scotland): Edinburgh Fringe! This is the big one! If you’re in Europe, come on out! Let’s see that flyer (made by the inimitable Tian Chen) one more time:
Sternal Journalists!
I’m juggling a variety of things, so this may be the quickest SternJourn yet. As I prep for Edinburgh, one of the things Mike and I have been doing is reaching out to press and reviewers to entice them to come spend an hour laughing and chumming away at our show. One of them asked us to submit a little e-mail Q+A they send to performers from the festival.
I like one of the answers I wrote even a couple days after writing it, so in this edition of Julian burns other material here in the Journ, I will share it:
Q: Who inspires you?
A: There’s this story-thread in the new-ish American kitchen dramedy The Bear where everything is falling apart at the restaurant, but the pastry chef ignores it while trying to perfect a donut. In the all-is-lost moment, the restaurant has essentially collapsed, but the donut is divine.
At times during prep for this show, I’ve tried to remind myself to ignore the restaurant and perfect a donut. The donuts are what people remember.
Eh? Eh! It’s what’s been keeping me going in a hectic time. Also, I don’t think it’s something to do all the time. But it’s also also something you gotta do some of the time.
Recommendations
The Complete Works. Playlist. I just discovered that podcast producer extraordinaire Avery Trufelman (99 Percent Invisible, Articles of Interest, Utopia, The Cut) has collated all of the episodes of radio she’s ever made in one great Spotify playlist.
Early Nots Girly Pops. Playlist. The same, but different. This is a playlist of poppy woman ballads from roughly the early 2000s. I made it like 7 years ago. I listened to it on my drive down to Redondo Beach today. It holds up.
That’s it for today. Make time for the donuts.
Love,
Julian
P.S. I spend anywhere between two and twelve hours a week on the Sternal Journal. If you enjoy receiving it (and are RICH) consider becoming a paying subscriber. For just a few bucks a month, you can provide me with a bit more time to come up with fun topics, poems, and interviews; and you with probably fewer typos.
