cresting spaces, but mostly recs
because I'm actually staying on top of it this time
Helloooo Sternal Journalists,
It’s late and I’m going to bed. BUT not before I keep up my streak of actually sending out the Sternal Journal on time.
This week, a friend of mine was talking about “creative spaces” and accidentally typed “cresting spaces.” I, having lived in LA for 15 years now, thought that a “cresting space” was some sort of new, woo-woo concept I was supposed to know about. So before I asked, I tried to figure out what it was. The friend was talking about a dance class, so I thought maybe it had to do with a place where people are physically cresting, or maybe it had to do with a place where people can swell in some way. This could be a creative space where people are practicing something they love, or it could on an athletic field or court, or it could be a dance floor or other social space. And then I thought, WOAH, there’s not really a word for that. Just the meta-category of places where people get to not just be themselves, but be the fullest version of a thing they want to be. And I thought, that’s pretty cool. What a typo. Cresting spaces were born.
Anyway…
Inspirations!
Dustin Hoffman. Even though he’s not really in the movie that long, Dustin Hoffman is great in Tuner, a heist love story starring Leo Woodall as a piano tuner with hyperacusis—basically he can hear too well—and he realizes he can pick safes. Things get messy. Very good movie.
Bauuer. I am not an EDM guy, but I did love the song “Harlem Shake,” back when the rest of the world loved or hated it. And I was surprised to love the entire new album by its maker, Bauuer. The album is called U and if you wanna check out a sample, start where I did: “Calling Out For U.”
Pema Chödrön. I haven’t finished, but have found this Ezra Klein ep with Chödrön realllly nice to listen to.
Sam Salem. Sam is my good friend and has a podcast out with my other good friend, Joey Bragg, who apparently was a big deal on the Disney Channel but I was too old for that show so it does not make me feel weird around him. Sam’s new podcast where he uses his addiction to the internet for good to stalk people and find unexpected pieces of information, and then cook for them, is very entertaining and you should get on it now.
Alright, hell yeah, successfully published on time 3 weeks in a row. Much love!
Julian!
Oh and because I need a picture for this ep, here’s me from a show on Friday, that was definitely a cresting space in more ways than one.
