The Sternal Journal
Guaranteed more pointless than ever before
Sternal Journalists,
I hope you're all doing your best to stay peaceful and germ-free in this different world. It feels very silly to do anything silly right now, so today's Journal won't be silly.
(Next week's probably will be. Perhaps egregiously so. Maybe to a degree that makes you say, "Mm. Not right now, Julian." Hopefully not, but I'm just managing expectations here).
But for this week's respite from silliness, I implore you: if you feel (relatively) safe and in control of your situation today, take 5 minutes to think of one person or organization in your community who may need assistance. If you can, check on them. See if they need anything.
And if you're not sure how to help, don't feel that you failed. Being aware of people's needs is half the battle. Maybe you'll talk to someone tomorrow or see something on the internet later that helps you help them.
If you're not sure how to do any of this (even how to reach out or look for people who need help without endangering yourself). reply to this e-mail. Text me (240.305.6927). I'm very happy to do some sleuthing for or with you.
And if you don't know where to start, check out JusticeLA's initiative calling for LA County to act immediately to precent COVID19 deaths in the jail system (I promised: not silly!).
Effects on the incarcerated may seem random or specific to single out, but it's important and I'm essentially picking at random because coming up with an exhaustive list of the vulnerable communities being overlooked in this crisis would be impossible.
This thing is touching everyone and that's why it's important for those of us currently sheltered, fed, and safe to do our best to account for those who aren't.
That's all for today. Recommendation: if you have Disney+, The Great Mouse Detective is a hot-ass movie that stills holds up.
Love you all.
Julian
